Question:
What can I do to maximize my experience in a class or conference?
Answer:
Following the tips below may help enhance your experience:
► Check your connection speed: You can find a website offering a speed test by searching Google. If you are using your tablet or phone, we highly recommend using a Wi-Fi connection rather than using your mobile data. If you are using a desktop, laptop or Mac, we recommend, if available, that you connect your computer to the Internet using a cable (Ethernet) from your home router rather than Wi-Fi. If you have several wireless devices connected to your broadband router, using a cable connection will minimize wireless transmission interference.
► Keep your device updated: we highly recommend check your updates and install the latest available updates.
► Canvas: we recommend that you use the latest version of Google Chrome to log in Canvas regardless of which device you are using and to keep it updated.
Note: In Mac you need macOS 10.13 High Sierra version or newer in order to run the latest version of Google Chrome.
► To improve performance of your device: before you join a conference try to close all unnecessary programs running in the background and any programs not required to connect to the conference.
► In the conference: Take turns to talk in a conference. Sometimes the sound breaks when more than one person is talking.
► In video conferences: if you are experiencing a decline in video or audio quality, we recommend turning off the camera to improve the audio quality. If several people have their cameras on and the quality of the conference drops, we recommend that everyone turn off the video and continue the conference with audio only.
► Be aware that Internet speeds are always variable and you may experience bad connection for short periods of time. Also, the quality of the conference may vary due to the number of people are using the service at the same time world-wide, the Internet Service Provider of each area and the connection of each person in the conference.
For presenters:
► Check your microphone: Find a quiet place to test your microphone in order to minimize background noise.
Record yourself with “Voice Recorder” (built in Windows 10 - you can access this by going to: Start menu > Scroll down the app list > Voice Recorder)
It's a simple App where you can record your microphone and listen to check volume and quality of the sound. If you can hear a good clear recording of yourself, your microphone is working properly. If you cannot hear your voice properly you might need to go through some troubleshooting steps or try with another microphone. In MacOS you can use Quicktime for the same procedure.
