Question:
How do I handle receiving an unusual email?
Answer:
All faculty, staff and students should follow these steps when they receive an unusual email.
*Please note: Our spam filters block most unusual or spam messages being sent to your email account. Unfortunately, spam is an ever-evolving issue, and some messages may find their way to your Inbox.
Follow these steps to check whether an email sent to you is legitimate:
- Do you trust the person the email was sent from?
- If the email has an attachment:
- Were you expecting an attachment?
- Only open attachments from senders you trust.
- If the attachment is password protected, be extra cautious.
- Is the email addressed to you specifically?
- Does the email's verbiage have frequent grammar/spelling errors?
- Remember, do NOT click on any links in any emails you feel may be suspicious.
- Please do NOT open the unusual email or click any links within the message.
If you do not recognize the sender's email address, or if the subject and body of the email seems suspicious report the email by clicking the Phish Alert Report button or notify IT by Reporting a Security Incident.
How to delete an unusual email:
- In Outlook, right-click the email and select "Delete."
- In Office 365, either right-click the email and select "Delete," or check the box next to the email and click the "Delete" button towards the top of the page.
